A new food company here on St Mary’s has scooped 5 prestigious food awards from Taste of the West. “It was such a shock to hear that we had won these awards, I still can’t quite believe it’ said Michelle Mapplethorpe, proprietor of the Hand Made Fudge Shop on the Strand. Michelle has been working hard all Winter perfecting the range of flavours of her hand made fudge and all that hard work has really paid off as she has scooped a Bronze Award for each of her Loopy Lemon Meringue, Maple Walnut Swirl and Choc Orange Sensation flavours, a Silver for her Vanilla Velvet and the Prestigious Gold for the unusual but very tasty Cheeky Cherry Bakewell flavour.
You better rush off to the Strand as the fame spreads the prices may rise. Congratulations Michelle the hard work has paid off.
The Vet Support Group, here on the islands, has just launched a great new calendar for 2011. Featuring photographs of some of the islands animals the funds that it will raise will all go to ensure that our islands vet, Heike Dorn, is able to stay here on Scilly. You can order your copy of this great calendar by going to http://www.vetsupportgroup.co.uk/fundraising_membership.html
It has been a great weekend here on the islands as we have had Tom Henderson OBE, the founder of the charity SHELTERBOX, giving a couple of talks about how he conceived the idea and set up the charity. Tom and his wife Jayne gave 2 really interesting talks, Saturday evening on Bryher in the Community Centre and Sunday in the Town Hall on St Mary’s. Both were good evenings and enjoyed by all those who attended. Thanks to Kathy on Bryher for all here help, Chris & Di Peat for working really hard to put the tent up on Bryher and thanks to Richard and John for all their help on St Mary’s. You can find out more about the amazing work done by Shelterbox by going to www.shelterbox.org
The islands has a new ‘First’ sporting facility to boast about, the Most South Westerly Bowling Green in the country. Hats off to Richard Chiverton (Chivvey) and his helpers Jim Kerslake and David Parr (H) for the foresight and the energy to produce this fantastic facility. This is a great addition to one of the most attractive Golf Clubs in the country and where in the World can you bowl with such a fabulous outlook. When you’re on the islands pop up and see Faye & Ramsey they will be pleased to greet you. www.islesofscillygolfclub.co.uk/
